It's happened to all of us. Your smartphone falls and gets up from its fall with a big chip that will have to stay with you for several months, even a few years. Another common case: you put it face down on the screen on a surface, and when you pick it up, a scratch has appeared on the front of your phone. Infuriating.
To counteract these mishaps, brands are equipping themselves with glass that they promise to be ever more resistant. The champion in this field, or at least the one whose name comes up most often, is Corning. The recently announced Galaxy S25 Ultra is equipped with a whole new generation of glass, Corning Gorilla Glass Armor 2.
What exactly does Corning promise?
According to a press release from the Korean company, the glass in question is four times more scratch-resistant than its competitors. It is also capable of withstanding a 2.2 m drop onto "a surface replicating concrete".
To support its claims, the brand has published two short videos on its YouTube channel. The first focuses on the drop, the second on scratch resistance.
Let's start with the drop. The first merit of the video is that it allows you to see the distance that 2.2 m represents, since the smartphone is dropped well above the tester's head. The promise is therefore clear, for a classic drop from your hand to the ground, you should be good.
The video then seeks to compare Corning glass with an unmentioned competing brand. Obviously, the Gorilla Armor 2 does better.
Second video, concerning scratches this time. To demonstrate that its glass is four times more resistant than competitors, Corning applies a weight of 1 kg on competitors (not mentioned of course) and 4 kg on its own glass. All on sandpaper that rubs the glass.
Here again, Corning comes out without a scratch, while its competitors with four times less weight end up scratched.
Conclusions in the laboratory
We have not yet tested the Samsung Galaxy S25, apart from our hands-on. It is therefore difficult for us at this stage to confirm or not the exceptional resistance promised by the manufacturer and its equipment supplier.
On the other hand, an important nuance must be made. In the footnotes of Samsung's press release praising the merits of its S25 Ultra glass, it is nevertheless specified this: "The announced performance of Corning® Gorilla® Armor 2 is based on Corning's internal laboratory tests. Actual performance may vary."
Clearly, in the real world, many parameters can call into question this promise of 2.2 m. The angle of the fall and the surface on which it occurs are already two elements to take into account.
Let us recall for all intents and purposes that despite its first-generation Corning Gorilla Glass Armor, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has already been seen on numerous occasions with cracks on its front face.
