French studio Microïds offers us a one-way ticket to nostalgia with Goldorak: Le Festin des Loups, an ambitious video game adaptation that fans of the hero were no longer waiting for. Forty-five years after the anime was first broadcast on Antenne 2, it is back on our screens in a modern and fully interactive version. Far from perfect, especially in some of its technical aspects, the title nevertheless stands out as a nice surprise for the Récré A2 generation.
This video game designed for fans of the giant robot will not fail to touch the heartstrings of players in need of nostalgia. If a few graphical imperfections aren't enough to scare you off, here are three good reasons to (re)dive into the adventures of Prince Actarus today.
Nostalgia perfectly respected
While Microïds productions are not yet at the top of their game technically, it must be admitted that their developers know how to convince players. Goldorak Le Festin des Loups is a true celebration of anime and redoubles its efforts to recreate the unique atmosphere of the work of the past.
The new French version has its little kitsch effect, while the cutscenes and other staging find the iconic charm of the cartoon. Special mention for the new orchestration of the soundtrack, which does not distort the cult melodies in any way, while giving them a sound in keeping with its time.
Dazzling fights
Who says Goldorak says Fulguropoing and other eponymous abilities. Unsurprisingly, this adaptation includes all the robot's flagship attacks for ever more titanic fights. The fights are quite dynamic and sometimes require concentration and dexterity to overcome the toughest bosses.
For big kids who have always dreamed of controlling the famous robot, nothing will beat the first K.O.s with an Asteroid Axe or Cornofulgure. The progression system via a talent tree, although anecdotal, still offers a feeling of increasing power throughout the adventure. Starfox-style ship sequences and retro shoot'em ups also punctuate the story's progress for more diversity in the gameplay.
Rediscover the story from the front row
Playing Goldorak Le Festin des Loups is also a new way to experience the universe imagined by Gō Nagai. No more passively following the adventures of Prince Actarus: the player is placed at the heart of this cult story. After dreaming in front of Récré A2 of one day being able to take a seat aboard Goldorak, it is now possible to lead the fight against the Vega empire as the main actor.
By following the storyline from this new angle, the events are told differently and will surprise even fans who know the anime like the back of their hand. With a lifespan of around ten hours, the title does not hesitate to take a few shortcuts in its narrative that remain tolerable despite everything.
Price and availability
Goldorak Le Festin des Loups has been available on PC, Xbox Series X and PS5 since November 14 for a recommended price of €49.99 and will be released on PS4 on November 30. Switch players will have to wait until next year before being able to embark on this adventure, at a date that is still unknown.
