A Watchos 11.3 bug makes miseries to the old Apple Watch

Last night, Apple delivered an impressive stream of updates for its operating systems: iOS 18.3, macOS 15.3, tvOS 18.3… and among all these updates, one in particular is causing problems, it is watchOS 11.3. Apple Watch models that cannot be updated to watchOS 11 are no longer able to install the latest version of watchOS 10, in this case watchOS 10.6.1.

It's stuck with watchOS 10.6.1

However, if this update was applied before the delivery of watchOS 11.3 and iOS 18.3, then there is nothing to worry about. With watchOS 10.6.1 having been provided in August 2024, chances are that a majority of Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, and Apple Watch SE (1st generation) owners have indeed updated.

On the other hand, a watch still running a version prior to watchOS 10.6.1 will not be able to update, at least not for the moment. And that’s a problem, because Apple Watches that are not up to date with their watchOS version can no longer be paired normally with an iPhone; they absolutely must be running the very latest version of the operating system. In the case of these models, the most recent version of their software is therefore watchOS 10.6.1.

In these conditions, Apple has to get both hands dirty to fix the situation. No doubt an update will be offered soon to put the situation back in order.
