Adoption rate: iOS 18 on the same momentum as ios 17

Apple went all out with iOS 18 when it came to new features: there were over 250 when the final version of the operating system was launched last September. And in October, Apple orchestrated the phased launch of Apple Intelligence features, which the manufacturer heavily promoted despite their beta status and the fact that they are only available in English.

68% of all iPhones running iOS 18

All this excitement hasn't really set the stage for the adoption of iOS 18. Let's be clear: the update has still been installed on a vast majority of iPhones in circulation, a constant for all versions of iOS at this time. iOS 18 thus shows an adoption rate of 68% as of January 21, according to Apple's figures. This is slightly better than iOS 17, which was present in 66% of iPhones on February 5, 2024. iOS 16 was available in early 2023 at 72%.

Adoption rate: iOS 18 on the same momentum as ios 17

If we only consider iPhones launched in the last four years, the adoption rate of iOS 18 is 76%, exactly the same as iOS 17 (81% for iOS 16). On iPad, iPadOS 18 is installed on 53% of all compatible tablets, again the same level as iPadOS 17 at this time last year. On iPads launched in the last four years, iPadOS 18 shows an adoption of 63%, 2 points better than iPadOS 17 a year ago.

What do all these numbers tell us about iOS 18? Thanks to the manufacturer's very aggressive marketing campaign for Apple Intelligence, adoption is a little faster than for iOS 17, but ultimately, not necessarily by much more. It must be said that Apple Intelligence only works on iPhone 15 Pro and above, in a handful of countries. For the rest, the fact that Apple continues to update iOS 17 (with iOS 17.7.2 last November) does not necessarily push users to switch to the new version.
