After a few big nonsense, Apple Intelligence's notification summaries deactivated for certain applications

Apple thought it was doing the right thing by developing a system that allows multiple notifications to be summarized in one or two sentences, which saves a little time on consulting alerts. But in some cases, this Apple Intelligence function generates misinterpretations, or even misinformation in the case of press application notifications.

Disable summaries while waiting for something better

This is particularly the case for BBC apps: iPhone users recently learned that Rafael Nadal, the "Brazilian" tennis player (he is Spanish) had come out (no), or that Luigi Mangione, the alleged assassin of an American CEO, had killed himself (this is false). After several high-profile and embarrassing cases, Apple has promised improvements.

The beta 3 of iOS 18.3 released yesterday temporarily disables notification summaries for apps in the “News & Entertainment” categories. For these apps, the feature will return in a future software update while Apple improves the “experience.”

Other changes have also been made with this beta. Notifications generated by Apple Intelligence are now presented in italics, in order to better distinguish them from other notifications (not sure that this will be very clear to users who are not aware of it).

It will be possible to disable notification summaries in an app directly from the home screen or the notification center of the iPhone or iPad, by swiping the alert and choosing the new option "Disable summaries".

When activating notification summaries, iOS 18.3 will clearly remind you that this is a beta function. And in the iOS Settings app, Apple will warn that these summaries "may contain errors". Remember that this function, and all those of Apple Intelligence, will arrive in Europe (and in French) in April.
