Android Automotive will receive a torrent of applications next month

Google announces the upcoming arrival of new applications on Android Automotive. This program, unveiled at the Google I/O 2024 conference, aims to fill the gap in options on the Play Store for cars, by selecting applications already compatible with large screens.

New applications for Android Automotive

Google is preparing to enrich the Android Automotive ecosystem by making available applications optimized for screens embedded in cars. This program targets existing applications already adapted to large screens, such as those of tablets or Chromebooks, but meeting specific requirements for their use in cars. The first categories concerned include video, games and browsers. However, only applications meeting the quality standards defined by Google will be integrated.

To improve the user experience, a new feature, called "compatibility mode", will be introduced. This mode automatically adjusts the display of applications, making them more readable from a distance and blocking certain functions when the car is in motion. This will allow applications that are not fully compliant to still integrate into Android Automotive, provided that they meet essential security criteria.

A launch imminent

The program will launch in February 2025, but Google remains tight-lipped about the applications selected for this first wave. When it was announced, the company cited AMC+ as an example of a video application for users, particularly during downtime, such as charging electric vehicles. Other categories could be added in the future, based on user and developer feedback.

To install these applications, vehicles must be certified by Google to ensure their compatibility with the program. Currently, several models equipped with Google Built-In meet these criteria, and others should be added as Google collaborates with car manufacturers. With this program, Google intends to improve the Android Automotive ecosystem, which is still limited compared to the classic Play Store, while ensuring safe and road-ready use.
