This is a path announced by The Information, which imagines the post-TikTok era in the United States, starting Sunday. While the Chinese application is very close to the date of January 19, when it must be banned from the United States, the Google and Apple app stores could therefore remove it from their platforms shortly. A federal law of April 2024 threatened the application to change ownership for its American branch, in order to guarantee "national security" and remove ByteDance and Beijing from its control and access for mass surveillance purposes.
On the other hand, if TikTok is closed for American users, "the result would be different from that imposed by law", announced The Information, relayed by the Reuters agency. If the app stores remove TikTok, the application should still remain available for users who have already installed it on their smartphone. According to the Chinese company's plans, a message will be displayed to them, in the form of a banner, to give them information about the ban, the American media learned from people familiar with the matter.
One thing is certain, ByteDance would be preparing for this ultimatum of Sunday, January 19, and plans on TikTok to give users the possibility of downloading all their personal data.
The news around the TikTok ban is accelerating
As a reminder, in the recent news around this TikTok affair in the United States, Bloomberg announced yesterday that the Chinese government was considering selling TikTok US to a certain Elon Musk, already the owner of X. The Chinese application had defined this rumor as "pure fiction". At the same time, the US Supreme Court justices, who are in charge of the last resort, had a majority of jurors who believed that national security took precedence over concerns about freedom of expression, defended by supporters of keeping the app in the United States, in exchange for a change of ownership.
Among them was a certain Donald Trump, who had previously opposed the app during his first term. Eager to take power on January 20, he had been challenging the Biden administration in recent weeks for not giving the case more time to "negotiate a solution with TikTok."
