If you're a Gen Z or Millennial, you probably haven't noticed anything unusual about Helldivers 2. The game developed by PlayStation Studios has been a real hit on consoles and PC since its release a few days ago. For those who live in a cave, it's a wacky communication shooter in which groups of 4 players go on "death to the alien" missions in a futuristic world filled with dangers.

The concept of cooperative play has found a good its audience, who never cease to sing the praises of all the technical part of the title. Helldivers 2 is truly a game as we like them, original and unique... or maybe not. Since it has had increased visibility, many players have pointed out its resemblance to barely hidden with a movie from the 90s. Helldivers 2 is in fact the perfect copy of Starship Troopers.

Starship Troopers 2

Released in 1998, the film depicts the adventures of a small armed group, left to fight terrifying aliens in the confines of space to warn Earth of an imminent invasion. There are 5 of them in the feature film, and 4 in the game. Visually, the resemblances – even complete similarities – are countless. The creatures to be slaughtered are particularly at issue here, without this being considered like plagiarism.

Self-sacrifice, democracy, the duty to protect one's homeland: all of these themes and more are found in Starship Troopers. You only have to watch the trailers for Helldivers 2 to understand that the game is headed in exactly the same direction. Both works display a certain irony, an exaggeration of these feelings in the service of satire. We see in Helldivers 2 a sort of homage to Paul Verhoeven's film that seems to be very well received by players.

Still big server problems

Helldivers 2 is so popular that it is experiencing quite a few problems related to server capacity. Following the surprise turnout last weekend, which brought together over 409,000 simultaneous players at its peak, the developers have temporarily increased capacity to support 450,000 users. The reality is that in France, many still cannot connect even after 30 minutes of waiting.

For the moment, we do not know when the situation will be permanently resolved, and if this resolution will arrive before the enthusiasm dies down. In the meantime, the PlayStation game continues to break records and to establish itself as one of the best gunplays of recent years.
