Even though smartphone stabilization is improving, a real stabilizer remains essential to achieve professional quality. Known for its drones, action cams and even electric bike motors, DJI is also a must in this field with its Osmo Mobile series. The Chinese giant's smartphone stabilizers are back and two versions are taking over from the DJI Osmo Mobile 7. The DJI Osmo Mobile 7 is accompanied by a more advanced version called the Osmo Mobile 7P.
Tracking improves to become more comprehensive than ever
DJI's seventh generation of stabilization, ActiveTrack 7.0 technology, is the big new feature of the Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P. Paired with the Mimo app, both stabilizers access the manufacturer's most advanced tracking technology. They are now able to adjust to follow subjects and their movements automatically, even in an environment deemed difficult. Auto capture gives the gimbal the ability to detect multiple subjects, and users can direct the gimbal to lock onto a subject or switch to another subject with a simple tap. DJI also mentions Smooth tracking, which allows the gimbal to target the photographer’s preferred focus. It also maintains continuous tracking even if the subject is obscured or moving quickly.
These new features are DJI's response to the improvements made by Insta360 on the Flow 2 Pro.
Multifunctional module and increased autonomy
Another important new feature is the arrival of a "multifunctional" module to help creators easily track subjects in using the smartphone’s camera. Available on the Osmo Mobile 7P and optionally on the Osmo Mobile 7, the small accessory attaches to the stabilizer “with a simple magnetic clip.” Above all, it offers gesture control to take photos, start or stop recording, activate tracking or adjust the composition:
- Show your palm to the module to start or stop intelligent tracking
- Make a “V” gesture to take a photo. It is also possible to start or stop video recording
- Making a “Double L” gesture with two hands adjusts the framing of a subject
The flagship model of the series, the Osmo Mobile 7P has a more powerful three-axis stabilizer, in direct continuity with the Osmo Mobile 6. The Osmo Mobile 7 stands out as the lightest stabilizer in its class, weighing around 300 g.
Among other new features, DJI mentions the presence of a side dial for more cinematic control. This new generation brings compatibility with the Apple Watch (via the Mimo app) and up to 10 hours of battery life.
Price and availability
The other strong point of this range could come from its price, with a starting price of 99 euros for the Osmo Mobile 7. It becomes the most affordable DJI stabilizer to date, while the 7P version is displayed at 159 euros. Available accessories include:
- DJI OM Quick Release Magnetic Mount
- DJI Mic Mini Transmitter
- DJI OM 7 Series Tracking Kit
- DJI OM Tripod Handle
