Does the end of Chromecast with Google TV sign update stopping?

The Chromecast with Google TV, launched in 2020, marked a major evolution by integrating a full interface and a remote control, offering an affordable alternative to competing streaming solutions. But Google has decided to abandon this model, preferring a new device, the Google TV Streamer, at a significantly higher price. While current owners can still count on software updates, new features may be limited.

Google is removing the Chromecast with Google TV from sale

The discontinuation of the Chromecast with Google TV is not a surprise. Google had already announced that it would cease production once supplies ran out. That time has now come, as evidenced by its removal from the Google Store. Now, the only official alternative is the Google TV Streamer, which costs €119, or €50 more than the previous 4K model.

While some users are still hoping to get their hands on a Chromecast with Google TV, the chances are getting slimmer. Very few online retailers still have the product in stock, and you'll probably have to turn to third-party sellers to find one. Same thing on the Google website where the product is marked as unavailable.

What happens to old Chromecasts with Google TV?

Good news for those who already own a Chromecast with Google TV: the device will continue to receive software updates. Google has confirmed that these models will get Android 14, although not all of the new features of Android TV 14 will necessarily be included.

However, updates have been rare. The last one, a security patch, was in November 2024. It is therefore unlikely that the devices will benefit from major improvements in the future. Google thus seems to be prioritizing its new ecosystem to the detriment of its old product, which had nevertheless seduced thanks to its affordable price.
