End of ADSL: these 162 municipalities will be disconnected on January 31

From the beginning of 2024 and until 2030, ADSL, the iconic technology for Internet access in France, will definitively give way to fiber. The copper network, historically deployed by Orange, will be gradually deactivated in batches, affecting several thousand municipalities. But when will your municipality be affected?

The timetable for the end of ADSL

The gradual dismantling of the copper network is taking place in several phases, called "batches". The first stage, scheduled for January 31, 2025, concerns 162 municipalities in 18 departments (Aisne, Ardennes, Charente-Maritime, Cher, Corrèze, Côte-d’Or, Finistère, Haute-Garonne, Loire, Mayenne, Morbihan, Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Vaucluse, Vendée and Overseas). The full list of municipalities for lot 1 can be found on the Orange website.

The following phases will concern larger lots, with millions of homes impacted:

  • Lot 2: 829 municipalities will no longer have access to the copper network. A migration to fiber that began on June 28, 2023 and will end on January 27, 2026.
  • Lot 3: 2,145 municipalities are concerned here and will no longer have access to ADSL via the copper network on January 31, 2027.
  • The last lots will extend until November 2030, marking the complete end of ADSL.

To find out more about the end of the copper network in your municipality, you can download the complete list on the Orange website which specifies the three lots as well as the precise dates of the end ADSL.

A well-managed transition

Before each cut, the municipalities concerned have three years to prepare. This period is intended to guarantee sufficiently advanced fiber coverage so that all homes can migrate easily. As soon as a batch is announced, the operators contact their customers to offer them a suitable fiber offer. In addition, town halls play a key role by increasing information campaigns for residents.

A year before the actual cut-off, it is no longer possible to subscribe to a new ADSL offer. Nationwide, from January 2026, copper network subscriptions will be permanently banned, pushing users to adopt optical fiber.
