Owners of 2017 Samsung TVs will no longer be able to use the Canal+ app as of the end of the month. The company is citing technical limitations on these models, which are too old to support the platform’s new updates.
Will your TV still be compatible with the Canal+ app as of January 31?
Canal+ has announced that technical developments on its platform make it impossible to support certain older devices. This specifically concerns Samsung TVs from the 2017 range. To find out if your model is affected, find the model number of your Samsung TV. It is usually listed in the TV’s settings, under “Device information” and/or on a label stuck to the back of the device.
The number begins with “QE” or “EU”, followed by a series of letters and numbers. To identify the year of your television, you need to locate a specific letter depending on the case: if the model begins with QE: look for the 5th letter from the end. If the model starts with EU: look for the 5th letter from the beginning.
Here is what each letter means depending on the year:
- D = 2024
- C = 2023
- B = 2022
- A = 2021
- T = 2020
- R = 2019
- N = 2018
- M = 2017 (TVs affected by the shutdown of the Canal+ application)
- K = 2016
- J = 2015
- H = 2014
What solutions are there to continue using Canal+?
If you have an affected TV and want to avoid investing in a new screen, options exist. Connected boxes, such as Apple TV, Android/Google TV solutions or the Amazon Fire TV Stick, allow you to enjoy Canal+ at a reasonable cost. For example, a Xiaomi TV Box or an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K costs around 60 euros, as Alloforfait reminds us.
For those who are considering buying a recent television, it is important to note that the Canal+ application is not compatible with Samsung models in the 2024 range. Canal+ specifies on its website that you can contact its customer service at 0801907601 to benefit from "other reception equipment at no additional cost."
