It's been three years (almost) since the last God of War installment was released. With Ragnarök, Santa Monica Studio brilliantly completed its arc of Norse mythology. While Kratos and the God of War license celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, it could be that the sequel is already well underway. After Greek mythology in a first arc (between 2005 and 2016), then Norse mythology (with God of War and God of War Ragnarök between 2018 and 2022), Kratos could take a little tour on the side pyramids and Egyptian gods.
God of War in Egypt?
The first rumors about an Egyptian bow for God of War do not date back to the last few days. During the development of God Of War Ragnarök, rumors and a leak of concept art that seemed authentic already suggested that Santa Monica Studio had thought about this possibility, before finally moving towards Norse mythology. After the release of Ragnarök, new rumors suggested that the next arc of the license would this time be centered on on Egypt, especially with some teases sprinkled throughout the game.
Today, new rumors with a report from DanielRPK that has come across regarding job offers from Sony. And apparently, the Japanese firm is reportedly producing a new, unannounced AAA game, and is in the process of the search for Middle Eastern actors for this new game: “Sony is looking for Middle Eastern actors for an unknown AAA game, which will probably be the next God of War exploring Egyptian mythology”, confirms DanielRPK in his report.
A few years ago, Cory Barlog, the creative director of the God of War license, had also pitched a first idea that he had submitted to his teams regarding a God of War in Egypt: "I think the first idea I came up with was that we wouldn't even know what was going on. So it was Kratos walking through the desert — because in my mind we were still doing Egypt to begin with — the wind, the sand blowing everywhere as he crawled around a bit, and then he's standing on top of a dune and looking down at this city "really fantastic ancient".
If Egyptian mythology was not chosen in 2012/2013 for the launch of the new arc, there is a good chance that it will be in this third. But to be sure, we will have to be (a little) patient. Regarding the news around God of War, we recently learned that a multiplayer game project had just been canceled by Sony. We hope to have some slightly happier news this year on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the license.
