You use Google Drive to store your files, but also to synchronize documents from your computers? The latest update of the desktop client should please you. After long months of waiting, Google has finally deployed the feature that all users have been waiting for. And this should have a certain impact on the speed of the tool.
Google Drive will synchronize your files more quickly
For a long time, Google Drive users have been asking Google to support differential downloading to synchronize data on the platform. This is now done since the Mountain View firm has just indicated, in a blog post, that differential downloading had been deployed.
Concretely, if you are used to working on large files and you save a copy of them on Google Drive, the time needed to synchronize them on the platform should be much reduced. Because by adopting differential download to synchronize your documents, Google Drive will no longer reupload modified files in their entirety. The platform will, instead, compare the two versions of a file (the one stored on your PC, and the one stored online), to download only the modifications that have been made. A system that significantly reduces the time needed to synchronize each saved file.
And the good news is that this differential download function is not only reserved for Google Workspace users with a paid subscription. Google has in fact indicated that it has deployed it to all its users, including those who only have a personal account.
For several months, Google has been multiplying updates aimed at improving the performance of its online data storage and synchronization service. A few weeks ago, the American company rolled out another update in Google Drive to make videos playable immediately after being uploaded to the platform.
