The Gemini extension for Google Home is leaving its “Public Preview” program, to be deployed more widely to users. This is excellent news for those who are used to controlling their connected home by voice commands.
More natural commands for Google Home thanks to Gemini
The first stable version of the Gemini extension for Google Home is now available for all Android and iOS users (progressive deployment). It allows you to use a more natural language to manage the various devices in your home such as lights, roller shutters, speakers or your coffee machine. For example, you can ask: "Turn on all the lights in the living room except the one near the armchair" or "Dim the kitchen light".
Another new feature allows you to control certain non-sensitive devices, such as lights, directly from the smartphone's lock screen. This feature is quite practical for quick actions, such as turning on the lights outside the house when you come home, for example. On the other hand, security features like cameras or locks still require interaction through the Google Home app for security reasons.
Other welcome improvements
In addition to voice commands, Google is introducing visual improvements like thermostat controls that now display warm tones when the heating is on and cool tones for the air conditioning. Additionally, the Gemini app automatically redirects to the Google Home app for certain specific actions, like managing cameras or locking doors, simplifying navigation between the two interfaces.
To connect Google Home to the Gemini app, users can go to gemini.google.com from a computer and enable the extension via the settings menu. Activation is also possible from the mobile application, by accessing the Extensions menu via the user profile. The Google support page specifies, however, that the Gemini extension for Google Home is being rolled out gradually and that it may not appear immediately for everyone. So be patient.
