Google Photos changes the navigation interface on Android

Google Photos changes the navigation interface on Android

After revamping its iOS app, Google Photos is making similar changes to Android. The “Memories” tab is disappearing from the interface, but the feature remains accessible under a new name and in a new location. The redesign comes with a reduction in the number of tabs for a cleaner design.

A simplified design for Google Photos

Google Photos for Android now adopts a three-tab navigation bar: “Photos,” “Collections,” and “Search” (or “Ask” in some Gemini-powered versions). This change follows a trend seen in other Google apps, such as Google Maps, where reducing the number of tabs aims to offer a more fluid and intuitive interface.

The “Memories” tab, which featured an automatic feed of photos organized by event, has been removed. This feature is not abandoned, however. Renamed “Moments,” it now finds its place in the “Collections” tab. It is alongside other categories such as "Albums", "Documents" or "People and animals".

The essence of the "Memories" tab remains in another form. "Moments" continue to automatically organize photos according to events, but with a slightly different presentation. Access is via the “Collections” tab, where recent images are highlighted using a dynamic display.

The main interface retains the “Memories” carousel at the top of the main screen, but in a simplified form. These changes are being rolled out gradually via a server-side update to the app (version 7.11). It is therefore possible that this new feature is not yet available to all users.

With this redesign, Google Photos is looking to streamline its interface while maintaining its flagship features, such as smart search, adding details to photos, and simplified sharing.
