A recent update to Google Lens changes its behavior on startup. Instead of displaying the gallery of images stored on the device, the app immediately activates the camera view.
Google Lens camera is finally activated by default
With this update, Google Lens now directly opens the camera instead of displaying the gallery. Previously, users had to tap or swipe an item to switch to the live view. This change is available in version 16.0.7 of the Google app, on both Android and iOS.
A development that is part of a certain logic for Google, which continues to improve its tools such as "Surround to Search". The latter, introduced with the Samsung Galaxy S24, allows you to exploit the content visible on the screen of a device. With Google Lens, the focus is on live analysis, to perform searches in the real world.
Some additional features
In addition to this change, Google Lens benefits from other adjustments. The preview of the last captured image, now displayed as a circle in the interface, allows quick access to the gallery by tapping or swiping up. This simplified design thus complements the history icon introduced in 2024, which groups together past visual searches.
Other features enrich the user experience, such as the addition of a voice command accessible by holding the camera button. This option allows you to add a text query when capturing an image. In addition, Google is currently experimenting with a video search feature for users enrolled in its Search Labs program, opening the way to new uses.
