Google will use artificial intelligence to guess the age of users

Can artificial intelligence really determine the age of an Internet user? In any case, this is the bet of Google, which has announced the launch, in the United States, of an experiment in this direction. The search engine has developed a system based on machine learning — it is not generative AI — to detect the age of the user and apply the appropriate protections.

Restricting content to minor Internet users

Google does not specify how, technically speaking, it intends to go about it. But Meta implemented a model last September that uses “signals” to estimate the age of Instagram users; This could be analyzing a message (e.g., “Happy 14th Birthday”). Google certainly has enough data on users to guess their age.

When the search engine detects a minor, the latter will be notified of changes to content recommendations and settings. However, they will be able to prove their age with a selfie, entering a credit card number, or an official ID. The system, which will expand to other countries over time, will be launched in YouTube.

Google is also announcing changes to existing protection tools, such as a sensitive content alert in Google Messages, enabled by default for minors. Parents will also be able to restrict who their children can communicate with.
