Every time you change your phone plan, the same question arises: should you choose a physical SIM card or opt for an eSIM? Before choosing one or the other option, you must first check whether your iPhone supports eSIM. At Apple, all iPhone models since the iPhone Xr are compatible.
Compared to the physical SIM card, the eSIM has many advantages, particularly in terms of security. Because if your iPhone is lost or stolen, the thug who stole your iPhone will not be able to remove it, giving you a better chance of being able to accurately locate your precious item.
That being said, if you are about to abandon your physical SIM for an eSIM, the activation procedure is not insurmountable and will not take you more than a few minutes. Here's how to do it.
1. Open Settings
Start by opening the Settings of iOS. Then go to the Cellular Data menu and tap Add an eSIM card. Note that it is entirely possible to convert your current physical SIM card if you wish.
2. Scan the QR Code of your eSIM
Then select Use a QR Code. In principle, if you opted for an eSIM when you subscribed to your plan, your operator displays in your online management interface, a QR Code allowing you to activate your eSIM on your phone. Scan it using your iPhone.
3. Activate your eSIM
Once the QR Code is scanned, you should be able to activate your eSIM. Tap Continue, then in the next window, select your eSIM to unlock it. Enter your PIN, tap OK, then confirm the installation of your eSIM by tapping the Continue button.
4. Choose your primary and secondary numbers
If you use two phone lines on your iPhone at the same time, you will need to define a label for each of them. For example, you can choose a primary line and a secondary line. You will then need to define the number to use by default to make calls or send messages to your correspondents.
In the same way that you must choose one of the two lines to call or send text messages, you will need to choose the line to use by default for cellular data. Once you have made your choice, you can use either of the lines configured on your iPhone.
5. Change your number for calls and text messages
By default, your iPhone will use the main number you have selected to call or send text messages. To switch to the other line, to make a professional call, open the Phone application, then at the top left of the screen, press the blue label corresponding to the selected line.
You can then switch to your secondary line to make a call. Don't forget to repeat the manipulation to switch back to your main line if necessary.
For SMS, switching from one line to another is done directly from the new message entry window. Under your recipient's line, the From: line will allow you to select the line with which you want to send your message. Note that you can choose to display the Messages received for both lines, or for one or the other of your lines, by pressing the options button represented by three small dots, at the top right in Messages.
