If you've opened Facebook or Instagram on your smartphone recently, you've probably seen a strange warning screen from Meta asking you to reconsider "processing your information for advertising purposes." And for good reason, Meta had to change its approach and review its “payment or consent” model, which did not comply with the DMA, the new European regulation on digital markets.
Consequently, in addition to reducing its paid subscription, which allows users to avoid advertising on its various platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, Meta now offers European users an option to display fewer targeted ads.
But as usual, Meta has deliberately buried this new option in the depths of its Account Space settings. A very bad habit adopted by Meta to try to dissuade you from touching anything that could lower its lucrative business.
However, with a little gymnastics and rigor, preventing Facebook and Instagram from collecting your data for advertising purposes is not insurmountable. Here's how to do it.
1. Go to the Account Space
Whether you use Facebook on the Web or from the mobile application, the process is, in principle, the same. To begin, you must access your Account Space. To do this, select your avatar, then in Settings and privacy, enter the Settings menu. Then tap on Account Space.
2. Access advertising preferences
Once in your Account Space, select Advertising preferences and then enter the Advertising settings menu.
3. Modify your advertising experience
Now enter the Advertising experience menu. Select the Less personalized ads option, then in the pop-up that appears, tap Confirm.
From now on, the ads you see displayed on Facebook and Instagram will “be less related to your interests and activity.” However, in order to “pay” you for choosing fewer targeted ads on Facebook and Instagram, Meta says your browsing on both platforms may be interrupted by ad breaks. From time to time, you will be blocked for a few seconds (five seconds here), while the ad is displayed on the screen.
In other words, if you no longer want to be tracked on Facebook and Instagram, you will have to accept being stopped in the middle of your navigation by displaying advertisements.
