In Intermarché, automatic funds doped at AI to monitor customers

In March 2024, the Intermarché supermarket in La Farlède (Var) launched an experiment: the store's self-checkouts were equipped with the Vynamic Smart Vision surveillance system developed by Diebold Nixdorf. It is "designed to tackle the most common causes of losses in retail environments".

The checkout keeps a close eye on you

In concrete terms, the self-checkout is overlooked by a camera that analyzes customer behavior in real time, with the help of a good dose of AI. The system can thus detect if an item has passed without being scanned, if items have been stacked on top of each other, or if a customer leaves the checkout without paying.

In the event of an error, this Smart Vision displays a message on the checkout screen, and alerts an employee who will then go on-site and carry out checks. This is not only about combating shoplifting, but also freeing up time for employees.

This solution has reduced transaction errors at the La Farlède supermarket to 1% (the rate was 3% until now). As for employee interventions, they have decreased by 15%, which helps to make the checkout process smoother. This pilot test having achieved its objectives, the Mousquetaires group will deploy these cameras in all Intermarché stores, but also Netto and Bricomarché.
