The year 2025 will be the year of the iPhone 17 at Apple and the iPhone SE 4. The more affordable smartphone from the brand with the apple is preparing its big comeback and will be entitled to many changes, including a more modern design. Rumors suggest a resemblance to the iPhone 14 and one of the big questions is whether the screen will have a notch or the Dynamic Island. Leaker Evan Blass has relaunched the debate this week by mentioning the presence of the famous “dynamic island” that appeared with the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro Max.
Dynamic Island or notch: the mystery dissipates
However, the latest dummy models rather suggest the integration of a notch. This is also the opinion of Ross Young, a renowned analyst in the screen industry, and we agree with this opinion at Journl du Geek. Integrating a "premium" feature like the Dynamic Island on an entry-level model would be a surprise, and could cannibalize sales of more expensive iPhones. The notch seems much more likely to us and closer to Apple's idea of offering a cheaper iPhone, at a controlled cost.
The iPhone SE 4 is nevertheless announced as a major evolution in Apple's smartphone range. This new model promises to mark a significant break with its predecessors and the screen is one of the manufacturer's priorities. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to feature a 6.06- to 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate, similar to the iPhone 14. As with the iPhone 16, some will be upset to learn that the refresh rate increase is not coming soon, and Apple is expected to improve the iPhone 17's panel first before doing so on an affordable model. Regardless, the announced improvements are a leap forward from the previous SE model, which was limited to a 4.7-inch LCD screen.
A large screen should spell the end of compact iPhones
The move to a large screen offers a superior visual experience, but it involves a significant change in size that will not please everyone. The iPhone SE 4 will be the largest model ever designed in this series and its launch will definitively sound the end of small formats in Apple's catalog, a few years after the abandonment of the iPhone mini. Less compact, the SE variant will abandon the Home button in favor of Face ID and will be equipped with a USB-C port. Let us recall that the absence of this port hastened the end of the iPhone SE 3, equipped with a Lightning connector, in the European Union.
Under the hood, the iPhone SE 4 would not be left out. It should be equipped with the A18 Bionic chip, the same as that used in Apple's flagship models, as well as 8 GB of RAM. This power would be used in particular to make the SE model compatible with Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI, paving the way for advanced features. Another curiosity is that this smartphone would integrate the first 5G modem developed internally by Apple and expected for many years.
A price increase?
Apple has not made the launch of the iPhone SE (2025) official, but the latest leaks predict a launch for spring 2025, probably in March or April. Although the price of the future SE 4 is not known, we should expect an increase compared to its predecessor. The next model could land around 599 euros in France, compared to 529 euros for the third-generation iPhone SE. An increase that Apple should justify by the many changes made to this smartphone, which would offer high-end features at a more accessible price than Apple's flagship models.
