The Switch's success is undeniable, but it remains marred by the Joy-Con Drift problem. This phenomenon, also called "Nintendo Switch controller drift", is characterized by ghostly movements. In-game, the experience is spoiled by a character who moves around the screen on his own, without any action on the part of the player. Nintendo turned a deaf ear to this for a long time, before acknowledging it and committing to repairing all affected controllers free of charge. The support even concerns Joys-Con that are no longer under warranty, without eradicating the problem.
Indeed, the Japanese giant has not really modified the design of its controllers. Thus, even the most recent Joy-Cons are likely to encounter this malfunction and the question is not really "if" your controller will be affected, but rather "when". While many theories have accompanied the phenomenon, the latter is inevitable due to natural wear and tear.
Faced with To address this issue, iFixit collaborated with Gulikit to develop the Gulikit JoyStick. Featured in the form of a kit, it consists of a joystick and tools allowing Nintendo Switch owners to repair their faulty controller themselves and permanently fix the problem.
The manufacturer offers a Hall effect analog stick and this feature makes all the difference. Present in the triggers of recent controllers, this technology is rarely found in joysticks. However, it is more resistant to time and Hall effect sensors suffer less mechanical wear. They are not subject to the famous "drift" original Joy-Cons.
Price and availability
Repair specialist iFixit offers its Joystick GuliKit Fix Kit for 21.95 euros. It also offers the individual stick (Joystick GuliKit) alone for 16.95 euros.
Gamers are now hoping that Nintendo will opt directly for this technology in its next console. Rumors are rife about the Nintendo Switch 2, but Big N will have to wait a little longer before unveiling this new generation. Almost seven years old, the Nintendo Switch is still going strong and has even become the third best-selling console in history this year. Given its hybrid format, it even claims the status of second best-selling home console of all time, with 132 million units sold. It is still a long way behind Sony's PlayStation 2 (155 million).
