Unlike Apple, which is almost alone in the field of AI, Android manufacturers can rely on Google. The Mountain View firm, behind the Android mobile operating system, has big ambitions in terms of artificial intelligence. At the Galaxy Unpacked event, Google confirmed its desire to place AI "at the heart of [its] concerns" and to reinvent the Android smartphone experience.
The Mountain View firm announces the deployment of several updates to Gemini to make it "even more useful, personalized and accessible". On the Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 devices, Gemini Live becomes more visual by allowing you to add images, files and YouTube videos to conversations. Google’s tool becomes more multimodal, personal and contextual with this new feature.
Project Astra features, including screen sharing and live video streaming, are also making their debut. They’re first coming to the Gemini app on Pixel devices and the Galaxy S25 series.
Finally, Gemini Advanced subscribers who have Pixel smartphones will be able to access Gemini Deep Research. This feature, which did not yet have a mobile version, promises to save you time during your advanced searches. Indeed, the tool is able to explore a subject and identify key information for you. It then compiles this information into a comprehensive summary with links to the sources.
New features for everyone, including two improvements to “Circle to Search”
If you don’t have a Pixel and don’t plan on buying a Galaxy S25, you can still enjoy a more efficient assistant. Google is adding the ability to ask Gemini to do several things at once in different applications. For example, Gemini can find options on Google Maps and compose a text message with the details, then offer to send it via Google Messages. This option is now available to all Gemini users on the web, Android and iOS.
At the same time, Google is announcing improvements to one of its flagship features: Circle to Search. Popularized last year during the announcement of the Galaxy S24, the function wants to be even more useful on all Android devices. Thanks to AI previews, useful information to further a search on places, trending images, unique objects and other elements visible on the screen will be suggested by circling them on the screen. “Inspired by a work of art? Circle it and discover an AI-generated preview with useful information and links to deepen your knowledge on the web”, explains the firm. While this new feature is coming worldwide, it is currently only available in English and where AI Overviews is currently available.
At the same time, the Circle to Search function is now able to recognize phone numbers, email addresses, and URLs. This makes it possible to take action with a single gesture.
