Nintendo: The secret of the horrific trailer “Who is Emio” already pierced?

The strange trailer unveiled yesterday afternoon did not fail to surprise players, particularly by its lack of context and information. It was in unison that all of Nintendo's social networks shared a video with disturbing visuals, simply titled Emio. This extract is accompanied by a hashtag that takes the words out of our mouths: “Who is Emio?“. Is it the horrible character in a trench coat, decked out a paper bag on his head? For now, it's time for speculation. The Japanese phrase displayed at the end of the trailer doesn't help us any further, since it translates to “the smiling man“, in reference to the face drawn on the silhouette's headgear.

After a summer Nintendo Direct loaded with major announcements, the Kyoto firm still manages to surprise us with an atypical teaser, far from its usual communication habits. While the atmosphere of the video brings back memories of Project Zero and other Japanese horror games, it seems that a Western team is in charge of the mysterious project. Simple coincidence or real revelation, a renowned studio for its horror productions announced on the same day that its developers are working with Nintendo to develop a new title called Project M.

M like Emio?

It was in an interview with the Polish media Strefa Inwestorów that the CEO of Bloober Team (Layers of Fear /Silent Hill 2 Remake), Piotr Babieno, sold the wick. A certain Project M, initially developed in partnership with Draw Distance (Serial Cleaners) has completely changed course.

This is a major development challenge due to its unique nature. After several approaches, we have decided to end the cooperation with Draw Distance because, due to our strategy, we need to think in terms of design and not just in terms of intellectual property” he said. “Project M, despite a budget significantly lower than The games we work on at Bloober Team are extremely important to our long-term plans. Furthermore, we are working on this project in collaboration with the best developers in the world for Nintendo platforms, and we cannot afford to only create a decent game.

The CEO adds that a small team from Bloober Team is supporting these “best Nintendo developers” to bring the project to fruition thanks to their affinity with the horror genre. However, a final quote leaves room for doubt. “The first previews of Project M will appear later this year, and the title will launch our new sub-label under the name Broken Mirror Games,” he explains. But since Emio has just been revealed to the public, is it really Bloober Team's project? Only time will tell.
