A patent shows what must undoubtedly be the mouse mode of the future Switch 2. The few official images published by Nintendo already showed the new Joy-Con on its side and sliding on the ground, which already suggested that such a mode would be one of the notable new features.
Thanks to the images published in the patent, we discover various ways in which the Joy-Con could be used with this new mode.
Several images show the hand placed on top of the Joy-Con, placed on its edge. The two fingers are placed in the same way as one would on a completely classic mouse, the index and middle fingers sharing the triggers. Small subtlety however, we notice that the thumb is placed on the stick, which can suggest that it is possible to both use the mouse mode and manipulate the stick.
Use with two controllers
Other images show how this mode could be combined with the use of two controllers. In one case, both hands benefit from the mouse mode, each with its Joycon, in the other the left hand uses the Joycon in controller mode. This last mode suggests a similar use to the PC, with the left hand using the stick in the same way as ZQSD keys.
Let's add that throughout the patent, the word "mouse" comes up 28 times as The Verge points out. Just like the term magnet, which comes up no less than 355 times! Enough to confirm, if need be, that the Switch 2 Joy-Con should indeed use magnets to attach to the console.
Generally, patent applications are filed several months before the product is marketed. And indeed, the patent application filing is dated August 2023, with a publication set for February 6, 2025, which suggests that it is indeed a patent filing for the Switch 2.
A new controller?
Other elements in the document show controllers with an unknown design. These adopt a less rounded and more elongated profile, so as to fit the grip in the palm of the hand and place all the buttons just under the thumb. This is reminiscent of VR headset controllers, for example.
Like the Joy Con, this alternative controller would work in pairs and could be used in mouse mode.
Remember that a patent filing does not necessarily result in a marketed product. This second controller could be both a future accessory for the console and a project that will never come to fruition. At this stage, we must therefore keep a minimum of perspective on this element.
When will the Switch 2 be released?
The Nintendo Switch 2 was briefly presented in a short 2-minute 22-minute teaser video that presents the design and a first game, probably the successor to Mario Kart 8.
The Kyoto firm will present its console in more detail during a live broadcast on April 4, 2025 at 3 p.m. (Paris time). The brand seems to be having some difficulty setting a price for its console, particularly due to the weakness of the yen.
