Peach's new adventures have just arrived on Nintendo Switch and some players must have been surprised not to find a multiplayer mode there. The games and consoles from the Kyoto firm are known for their family-friendly approach and predisposition to multiplayer games. Among the many successful franchises of the Japanese manufacturer, the universe of Mario and his friends is particularly known for its experiences to share with friends. Even some titles stamped "solo adventure", such as Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Odyssey, offer cooperative elements to play as a duo. Logically, Princess Peach Showtime should have offered multiplayer mechanics, but that is not the case.
This absence, although destabilizing at first glance, turns out to be a real positive point for the new video game adventure. How can such an omission be beneficial, you ask? Quite simply because it reinforces the identity and the objective of the title. As we mentioned in our test, Peach's quest in the Théâtre de l'Étincelle is not a simple joyful and colorful epic. the image of the character. It is above all about establishing the new image of the princess, this damsel in distress who has become a heroine over the course of her many appearances. And if we think about it, the inclusion of a multiplayer mode could have harmed these intentions.
Peach doesn't need anyone!
Since this is her first game since Super Princess Peach on Nintendo DS in 2005, the return of the princess in an adventure dedicated to her was not taken lightly. the light by Nintendo. Unique gameplay, new destination and new characters: Princess Peach Showtime is a spin-off rich in innovations. Just like Mario during his countless journeys, the heroine develops here her own arsenal of transformations and other powers. We then discover her in a new light, familiar enough to recall the franchise, but also original enough to offer a charming and new experience.
This focus on Peach and her power is an integral part of the gameplay, story and atmosphere of the game. If It's not hard to imagine a mode where Stella and the Theatrins could come to the princess's aid with a second controller, integrating a mechanic seen and reviewed in the Mario franchise could have affected the singularity of Princess Peach Showtime. The risk would then have been to offer “a Mario game for girls” that players would have quickly relegated to the rank of any derivative episode.
By separating itself from the multiplayer and the usual formats of the parent franchise, this spin-off enjoys a unique atmosphere that greatly benefits it. If we appreciated Nintendo's proposal so much, it is above all thanks to the simplicity and sincerity with which the manufacturer reinvented its princess. The title was able to present Peach as a character in her own right, not by forcing an image of an unbeatable "girlboss" (as the Super Mario Bros. The Movie did), but by simply offering her an adventure worthy of the name.
Princess Peach Showtime is not just any Mario game and even less just any Switch game. It finds its place in both within and alongside the original license, marking a new beginning for the character that will hopefully spawn even more titles that play on the franchise's overly entrenched codes.
