Radeon RX 9000: the reasons for the postponement and a new release date

We were hoping that AMD's silence about its Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 was just a strategy to better surprise us: a feint to make them arrive on January 22. In the end, it was not the case: a few hours before this deadline, David McAfee (vice president and general manager of the Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics cards division) nipped the wait in the bud by declaring that the RX 9000 would not arrive before March. He has since communicated the reasons for this postponement (which was a priori indeed one, we will come back to it a little later in the article). On the other hand, an American retailer has set a new date.

Refine the drivers, build up stocks

Let's respect the chronological order of events. A few hours after the refutation of a marketing at the end of January, David McAfee explained – still on the social network X – that the company needed more time to refine its graphics drivers for RDNA 4. More specifically to offer better support for FSR 4. His comments also reported the desire to structure the offer by building up large stocks.

In addition, the marketing slides below, published on Reddit (via VideoCardz), reinforced the idea that the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 should indeed be deployed these days. The texts state that gamers can “now” indulge in their hobby through these RDNA 4 GPUs.

March 23? Weird

The latest information comes from B&H Photo Video, a US retailer. This now indicates March 23 as the opening day for pre-orders of the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT.

That being said, it is not excluded that the source simply changed January to March (it initially mentioned January 23), without taking the day into account. Indeed, March 23, 2025 falls on a Sunday; the end point of a week that is generally not conducive to such a release.

This date should therefore be taken with a pinch of salt. As it stands, the only certainty is that the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 will be available between March 1 and 31. The official slide published by AMD on the occasion of CES 2025 displays the words "Available Q1 2025". And since it will not be before, in January or February, the slot is restricted to this period. After that, nothing prevents a release on March 31, a few hours before the set deadline. Like Intel for its first Arc Alchemist graphics card.
