Samsung confirms working with Google on augmented reality glasses

This probably won’t come as a surprise to many. Samsung and Google are working on augmented reality glasses, Samsung mobile division president TM Roh told Bloomberg. The executive didn’t have much more to reveal about the device, though, other than that the two partners will “try to reach the desired level of quality and readiness as soon as possible.” It’s impossible to give him a launch window, even a vague one.

Searching for the Holy Grail of Smart Glasses

But that’s normal: the technologies aren’t quite ready for AR glasses yet. The ones that do exist, like Snap’s Spectacles, are development kits that are too bulky and not very practical. However, these products are much more convincing in terms of mobility than the big mixed reality headsets like the Quest 3S or Vision Pro, as Meta's Project Orion has shown.

In the meantime, Samsung and Google continue to work on the Project Moohan, unveiled at the end of last year during the presentation of Android XR. While the headset is physically present in the showroom at the Unpacked event, there is no release date and no price. TM Roh explains that the manufacturer is still thinking about it, even if it is expected this year.

Before launching the commercialization of the Moohan project, the leader wants to make sure to have enough immersive content and applications — Samsung and Google are also working with creators and developers. This is to avoid a Vision Pro situation, where Apple is pretty much the only provider of content that is delivered drop by drop. Annoying for a product sold for €4,000…
