Snapdragon 6 Gen 4: The new Qualcomm chip for mid -range smartphones

Qualcomm is not only interested in the most expensive smartphones. Of course, the presentation of the new high-end Snapdragon chip every year is an event (as was the case with the Snapdragon 8 Elite), but we should not neglect the more affordable market segments for ordinary mortals. The American manufacturer has several options for manufacturers, and it has just unveiled the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 for mid-range devices.

Significant gains on graphics

No Oryon cores here, which are reserved for the most expensive and most powerful chips, but more classic Cortex cores for the processor: a Cortex-A720 at 2.3GHz and three other less fast A720s (2.2GHz) for the high-performance cores; four Cortex-A520 (1.8GHz) for the economical cores. The chip is engraved in 4nm by TSMC, and announces a CPU performance gain of 11% compared to Gen 3.

We find Adreno for the GPU, with a performance increase of 29%. Qualcomm also promises a 12% improvement for autonomy. This Snapdragon supports up to 16GB of RAM, as well as INT4 technology that can accommodate AI models with more parameters in the same RAM envelope. The chip can connect to a 1080p display with a display frequency of up to 144Hz (and even 4K up to 60Hz on an external monitor).

Qualcomm is targeting this chip at a wide range of customers, from gamers to creators, including pros! We will have a clear idea in the coming months, with the first smartphones equipped with it. Several manufacturers have already announced that devices will be equipped with this chip: we can expect new Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 models from Oppo, Realme and Honor.
