Will Starfield's heyday come several years after launch? The possibility of a success like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk: 2077 is far from improbable. The latest from Bethesda studio was released on Xbox and PC in September 2023 without achieving unanimous acclaim. Some players fell under the spell of the space adventure while others had a feeling of unfinished business after several years of grandiose promises. Without being as close to disaster as Redfall did, Starfield's limitations have put some players off, going so far as to call the title a “Skyrim in space” with mechanics that lag behind current standards.
While the RPG dimension is very effective, too many flaws tarnish the overall experience. Even today, Bethesda's production suffers from “rather negative” reviews on Steam, but the studio is not giving up. Post-launch redemption has become commonplace in the industry, and Starfield intends to hold on to that hope. A first DLC planned for this year (at a date still unknown) promises to transport players to the home planet of House Va’ruun. The story, titled Shattered Space, made a rather good impression at the Xbox Games Showcase, thanks in particular to its atypical artistic direction and its almost horrific atmosphere. While it's hard to judge whether such an expansion will save the title from its current troubles, Todd Howard hopes to continue development efforts for a “very long”.
One expansion per year: nothing is impossible
Guest by American Youtuber MrMattyPlays, Todd Howard came to discuss the future of Bethesda and its many successful licenses. Despite the attention paid to the adaptation of Fallout on Prime Video or the famous The Elder Scrolls VI which is long awaited, a segment dedicated to Starfield – spotted by our colleagues at Eurogamer – did not fail to capture the attention of the spectators. Asked about the annual expansions that Bethesda usually produces for its big titles, Howard reiterated his wish to work on Starfield for a long time to come: “I would say that is what we want, more or less, yes. How long will it last? I hope it lasts a very long time.”
This wish will at least be granted for the coming year, since the game director took care to confirm that the studio “is already working on the next DLC after this one (Shattered Space, editor's note)“. If it proves to be a success, it is not impossible that Starfield will remain at the heart of the news for a long time to come. Do you think it is possible for Bethesda's RPG to become as complete as No Man's Sky?
