Since the 80s, Mario games have enjoyed dazzling success, with astonishing growth. The latest title, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, has once again managed to amaze us with how much the franchise has reinvented itself. This new recipe was clearly the right one, as the game has broken an unexpected record. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is officially the fastest-selling game of the entire Mario franchise.
The first figures are impressive: 4.3 million units sold in its first two weeks. That's a bit less than Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which came out the same day, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder is already a game that's here to stay and will happily make it through the holiday season. This is great news for the game, which is actually the first real new entry in the Super Mario Bros. franchise in 11 years. Those who own a Wii U will remember that the game released on Switch was only a remake.
Be careful though, it seems that Nintendo's data does not go back before the Wii and Nintendo DS, so this excludes from the calculation all the Mario games released on NES, N64 or GameBoy. But given the rarity of video games from the time and the limited audience they targeted, there is little chance that any of the historical games reached this peak at their release. We are not taking into account the collection aspect here, but rather the immediate launch of a game.
On an excellent launch for the end of the year
Obviously, the success of the Super Mario Bros film has something to do with this success. The animated project produced by Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions) is definitely one of the best films of the year, just behind the Barbie phenomenon. He was able to breathe new life into the almost 40-year-old characters by talking to at the same time to a heterogeneous but passionate audience. There is no doubt that Super Mario Bros Wonder will be one of the flagship gifts for this Christmas 2023, as well as the DVD of the film.
As said in our test, Nintendo took risks with this opus which reinvents certain mechanics of Super Mario Bros, as well as the visual details of the characters. The animations are more fluid, approach an original angle, and the levels are of an absolute novelty. Wonder is a breath of fresh air on the franchise and this will be felt in the sales of the title for the coming weeks. Let's keep it open.
