When the Switch 2 was announced on January 16, a disturbing passage in the trailer immediately caught the attention of fans. Indeed, the video seemed to imply and even tease a new "mouse" feature for the Nintendo Switch 2's Joy-Con. Since then, fans have been speculating and coming up with many ideas, especially about how it would be possible to exploit this feature.
Today, Internet users have found official Nintendo patents highlighting this feature, which inevitably rekindles many theories and speculations.
The Switch 2: mouse functionality detailed
We owe this discovery to user Wario64 on Twitter/X. The latter came across an official patent from Nintendo, highlighting the famous feature “mouse” and explaining how it works. It should be noted that these documents were filed in 2023 and published this Thursday. They were therefore found very quickly. As is often the case on the Internet.
In this patent, we can read: “The sensor for operating the mouse detects light reflected by a detected surface, the light changing as it moves across the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface”.
This therefore confirms what fans have been thinking for a few weeks. Apparently, this feature should allow, in particular, to play games in traditional controller mode, or in mouse mode. If this feature is confirmed, in this way, it could be a huge plus for management games or FPS. In addition, given that there are two joy-cons, this would mean that Nintendo offers the possibility of having dual mouse gameplay, which can offer a totally new experience and different.
It remains to be seen how Nintendo could manage this. In any case, there is a very good chance that we will learn a little more on April 2, when the Nintendo Direct dedicated to the console is broadcast.
