According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the Tesla factory in Berlin started production of the new restyled Model Y on Tuesday, January 14. A surprise, since we did not expect to see the American electric SUV arrive in Europe right away. On January 10, it was unveiled in China, and its production in the sprawling Shanghai factory was to be the only one for a few more weeks.
Tesla does not seem to have the patience to keep its new generation of Model Y for Asian demand. The best-selling model in Europe in 2023, it was downgraded during 2024, and has not been able to catch up since. Its poor performance could be explained by customers' expectations to move to the new generation, which has been mentioned for months already. Now that all its secrets have been revealed, it will be all the more difficult for some to accept equipping themselves with the old generation, which has a more rounded look and will not benefit from the technological advances on board, and better autonomy.
50,000 orders in China, and delivery times that are already getting longer
In China, the restyled 2025 Model Y is already meeting with success with 50,000 purchase orders signed in recent days, insisted local media. Note that only two versions are currently available, namely the Propulsion and Long Range versions. We will have to be patient before seeing the arrival of the Performance and Long Range Propulsion versions (with a single engine).
The first deliveries in China are scheduled for March, and those in Europe should therefore not take too long. Note that the lead times should quickly lengthen if Europe shows as much interest, because in China, an order on January 14 already corresponds to a delivery in May, two months later. Obviously, the scales are much higher in China, where Tesla sold 480,309 copies of its Model Y in 2024, compared to less than 200,000 in Europe.
