The 2022 version of the media chronology, the highly complex mechanism that funds audiovisual creation in France, should be renewed for three more years. At least, that is the proposal of the CNC (National Center for Cinematography), which sent its partners a working version of the agreement intercepted by Contexte.
Pandora's Box
According to the CNC, it is still too early to gauge the concrete effects of the current vintage of the media chronology. The "major balances" found during the negotiations at the end of 2021 would therefore be maintained as is, unless platforms request changes.
Disney+ could thus take advantage of this to try to obtain a shorter broadcast window; currently, films broadcast in cinemas can be offered on the service 17 months after their theatrical release. It is 15 months for Netflix, in exchange for financing French cinema. Disney+ has indicated its willingness to finance more works.
In any case, there are very few days left to reopen Pandora's box and restart a cycle of negotiations, as the decree establishing the new media chronology dates back to February 9, 2022.
At the same time, we learned that Apple TV+ had just signed an agreement with professional organizations in the audiovisual creation sector for a period of four years. Apple is committed to "further supporting the production of European works and original French expression", Arcom is pleased to announce. In financial terms, this means that the service will have to invest a minimum of 20% of its annual revenues generated in France, which should not be huge given the confidential success of Apple TV+.
