The first rumors about the successor to the iPhone 16 suggested that the iPhone 17 could bring real upheavals. According to a new rumor, Apple would even be ready to radically review the design of its smartphones.
Everything would focus on the camera module. Until now, Apple has always placed it in the same place, at the top left of the back of its iPhones. Even when its design evolves, like in 2024 with the iPhone 16 which went from a square to a simple stack of modules, this rule has remained unchanged.
According to leaker Majin Bu (who works on X/Twitter), at least one iPhone 17 model could opt for a design replacing the traditional camera block with a horizontal bar. The leaker, who had successfully predicted the new layout of the iPhone 16 camera block, had already published a first photo going in this direction. He does it again here with a CAD file (a 3D image) showing the hypothetical future iPhone 17 with a shell.
It's impossible not to think of the Pixel 9 in front of this image, which seems an obvious inspiration. The small subtlety being that Google leaves a little space above the horizontal bar, where Apple would choose to stick the bar to the upper edge of the smartphone.
An empty horizontal bar, but for what purpose?
As always, we recommend that you take this image with the necessary tweezers. Especially since the source is not a leaker who has yet proven himself in a sustainable way, despite some successes.
Especially since there are still many gray areas, starting with the name of the model that we would have before our eyes. A priori, the said model would only integrate a single photo module, which is surprising in itself. Currently, all iPhones except the SE integrate at least two modules. So it could be either the base model, which would abandon the ultra wide angle for example, but that would be very surprising. We could also be in the presence of the iPhone 17 Air, which according to the rumor would only integrate a single module.
Another oddity that we must note: with a single module, this horizontal bar seems very empty. Two possibilities open up to us to understand this: either Apple would switch its entire range to this design, which would result in Pro models with other holes for other cameras. Or the space gained would allow Apple to integrate a slightly more sophisticated optical system.
These are only conjectures on our part. If this design is confirmed, we will end up understanding its meaning in the coming months by September 2025, iPhones being traditionally presented just after the summer.
