The future Apple Display Studio screen would get a full view

In 2020, Apple returned to the external monitor market with the Pro Display XDR, clearly aimed at professionals, if only because of its size (32 inches!), its resolution (6K!) or... its price of €5,499, all supplied without a stand (add €1,099 to the bill). Two years later, with the Studio Display, the manufacturer was interested in the general public, well, so to speak: this 27-inch 5K screen still costs €1,749. But at least it comes with a stand!

Mini-LED and ProMotion on the menu?

The Apple company could unveil a new version of the Studio Display, believes Ross Young. DSCC analyst, who specializes in the display industry, sees a mini-LED model by the end of the year, which would be a big change from the current version. The Studio Display is an LCD screen with LED backlighting, a proven and effective technology, but not without its flaws: relatively limited contrast, blooming effects (light scattering), and uniformity of lighting.

Mini-LED technology overcomes these flaws: it allows more precise control of the backlight, it offers much better contrast with deep blacks, and blooming effects are reduced. It is an intermediate technology before OLED. Moreover, the Pro Display XDR is equipped with it, just like the MacBook Pro (whose screens use more than 10,000 mini-LEDs).

This future Studio Display would hardly change in terms of design, it would keep its 27-inch diagonal. On the other hand, it would gain ProMotion, the technology that adjusts the display frequency according to the content (up to 120Hz on iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro).

This rumor has been circulating for some time. In 2023, the same Ross Young already announced that Apple was working on a "Studio Display Pro" equipped with ProMotion technology. The manufacturer would have canceled this project. In fact, it is better to take this new indiscretion with a pinch of salt.

Many questions remain unanswered. Will Apple take advantage of this to improve the integrated webcam, the source of many problems at the launch of the monitor? Will this monitor work with a more powerful chip than the A13? And above all, we are waiting to know more about the price.
