Samsung and Apple are reportedly planning to launch particularly thin models, the Galaxy S25 Slim and the iPhone 17 Air. However, recent leaks reveal that this quest for lightness and elegance could lead to concessions, particularly on batteries.
Thinness and small batteries for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
A recent publication on Weibo by the leaker Digital Chat Station gives some clues about the next generations of smartphones from Samsung and Apple. The Galaxy S25 Slim and the iPhone 17 Air, expected to be very thin models, could measure between 5.X mm and 6.X mm thick. Previous rumors suggested that the S25 Slim could be just 6.4mm thick. But this race for thinness seems to come at a price.
Thus, both models could be equipped with batteries between 3000mAh and 4000mAh. Although these capacities are standard for compact smartphones, they may be limited for premium devices, where autonomy is a key criterion for users. Other sacrifices seem to be considered to maintain these refined designs. For example, the iPhone 17 Air could be satisfied with a single photo sensor, an unusual decision for Apple. These choices raise the question of the balance between design and functionality.
Thinness at the expense of performance?
But by betting on smartphones with a thin and light design, Samsung and Apple may have to make other concessions. We are obviously thinking about the choice of chips that would be integrated into the smartphone. The Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC is being talked about for the Galaxy S25 Slim. The cooling system will therefore play a crucial role and will have to fit into a much thinner chassis, next to the battery. All without heating up excessively.
This would represent a lot of compromises for the user, even if the latter is looking for a thinner and lighter smartphone than other high-end models. It is true that the latter are often beautiful beasts, which do not always fit easily in the pocket.
