Naughty Dog has a busy schedule for its The Last of Us franchise. While series fans are patiently waiting for the release of season 2 for the HBO production scheduled for 2025, video game fans are regularly asking for news about The Last of Us Part III, the next upcoming installment. If rumors are to be believed, it is currently being prepared within the studio, and Neil Druckmann sometimes gives some news about it in a roundabout way.
The game director has just offered Sony a rather revealing interview on his plans for the third installment of the license. He states that the generative AI would be an excellent tool for designing video game dialogues, which means that this technology could be used to create certain dialogues. And that is where That’s where the problems begin. He says:
“AI is really going to revolutionize the way content is created, although it does raise ethical questions that we need to address. With technologies like AI and the ability to do motion capture from home, we’re reducing both the cost and the technical hurdles, allowing us to take on more adventurous projects and push the boundaries of storytelling in games. This evolution really allows creators to bring to life their ideas without the traditional obstacles.”
False good idea?
The use of artificial intelligence as a creative tool is an extremely divisive subject. While studios see it as a way to save money and speed up the development process, players are mostly worried about the often degraded quality of a game made with AI and for the employment of developers which is particularly at risk lately. Layoffs are happening at high speed, and integrating artificial intelligence into creative positions could eliminate the jobs of many programmers and designers.
For the moment, Neil Druckmann has not made official the use of AI for the dialogues of The Last of Us Part III. But his position on the subject may augur that this will be the case, in this game or in other projects such as spin-offs, sequels or franchises that have nothing to do with The Last of Us. For players, it is still a disappointment that a developer praises to This point artificial intelligence by vaguely evoking its ethical implications.
Especially since The Last of Us is an award-winning franchise particularly for the accuracy and depth of its storytelling, a quality that has always guided Naughty Dog in its video game journey. Despite this divisive information, Neil Druckmann is convinced that the game currently in development at Naughty Dog, without confirming which one it is, will be “perhaps the most thrilling game” in the studio's history.
