Oppo is teasing its next foldable smartphone, the Oppo Find N5, which is expected to be released in February 2025. It should simply be the thinnest smartphone on the market, with a thickness of around 4 mm when unfolded.
As a reminder, so far the champion in this area is called Honor Magic V3, and it measures 4.4 mm thick. Oppo has not yet communicated on the exact dimensions of its device, so we do not yet know if the Honor is beaten.
One thing is certain, according to the visuals shared by Oppo employees, who compare the Find N5 to an iPhone 16 Pro, credit cards or coins, the device seems to be approaching the limits. The edge of the smartphone is almost exactly the same size as its USB-C port.
Why is there no Oppo N4?
If you follow smartphone news closely, you may have noticed that there was no Oppo Find N4. The brand actually skipped a generation, going from the Find N3 to the Find N4 directly.
Since the Oppo Find N3 dates back to 2023, and there was no folding smartphone from Oppo in 2024, one might think that the generational leap comes from there. But another more likely possibility is tetraphobia.
Indeed, in several East Asian countries (China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea), the number 4 is considered unlucky.
This theory is far from fanciful, given that OnePlus and Oppo are accustomed to this fact. Indeed, there was no OnePlus 4, nor even an Oppo Find X4.
A release in France is unlikely
Oppo has only released one folding smartphone in France so far, the Oppo Find N2 Flip. It was not a book-style smartphone, like the Oppo Find N5, but a clamshell format like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
In addition, the Chinese brand is now engaged in a merger strategy with OnePlus. One of the consequences of this strategy is a certain rationalization on folding smartphones. OnePlus' first folding smartphone, the Open, was a restyled Find N3. It is therefore likely that the Oppo Find N5 will be renamed OnePlus Open 2 if it were to be released in Europe.
