AMD's silence, to better surprise us?

Unlike NVIDIA, which took advantage of CES 2025 to formalize several GeForce RTX 50s, AMD refrained from formally presenting its Radeon RX 9000 on this occasion. The company simply confirmed that it would now adopt a nomenclature based on that of the GeForce RTX, via its Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070, and that these solutions inaugurated the FSR 4. For the rest - characteristics, release date - we had to rely on unofficial leaks. Fortunately for us, there have been many since this non-announcement; we now have a very good idea of the specifications of the two aforementioned Radeons, but also their schedule. Moreover, several retailers have built up their stock.

Let's point out that several brands had Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 to show at the show. But obviously caught off guard by AMD, they didn't have much to say about them; so they were content to show them off.

Later, retailers began to reference the cards. The German reseller Geizhals, in particular. The latter revealed several aspects of the Radeon RX 9070 XT. Now, it even displays two dates: January 22 for the official announcement, and January 24 for the launch.

RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 specifications

Other retailers and leakers have contributed to this big reveal ahead of time by completing the information for the Radeon RX 9070. According to the latest news, the two RDNA 4 would have the characteristics below:

Graphics card RX 9070 align="left" data-sheets-value='{ "1": 2, "2": "RX 9070"}'>RX 9070
Calculation Units 64 56
Stream Processors 4096 3584
GPU Frequency Base / Boost 2.40 / 2.97 GHz 2.07 / 2.52 GHz
VRAM 16 GB GDDR6 16 GB GDDR6
Memory speed 20 Gbit/s 20 Gbit/s
Memory bus 256 bits 256 bits
Memory bandwidth 640 GB/s 640 GB/s

As you can see, AMD would not be doing any injustice in terms of dedicated video memory. The company would grant 16 GB of GDDR6 at 20 Gbit/s to both cards. The non-XT model would however have slightly fewer computing units, as well as lower GPU frequencies. Let us specify all the same that, in a now deleted publication, the reseller Overclockers UK mentioned 4096 stream processors for both references. There therefore remains a very slight uncertainty on this point. There is also a hesitation for the interface, with contradictory data. The balance, however, seems to be leaning more towards PCIe 4.0 x16 than PCIe 5.0.

Let's end with a few words on AMD's silence about its RDNA 4 cards at CES 2025. The company justified its silence by explaining that the time allocated to its presentation did not allow it to properly present its Radeon RX 9000. That as a result, its new generation of GPUs would be the star of a specific event. AMD didn’t reveal the date of this, but promised to roll out the RX 9000s before the end of the quarter.

On the other hand, during a Meet The Experts broadcast, Donny Woligroski, senior technical marketing manager for AMD processors, indicated that he had nothing more to add about the Radeon RX 9000. He did however specify that we would “hear more about it in the near future”. Next Wednesday?
