The Ryzen AI Max fleas will put a slap on entry -level graphics cards

According to preliminary results posted in the Passmark score database, the Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 395 and Max Pro 390 are said to be similar in graphics performance to a Radeon RX 7600, despite tighterpower and cooling constraints. More precisely, the Ryzen AI Max Pro 390 would obtain a 3D score of 16663 points, where an RX 7600 is limited to 16591 points. The Max+ Pro 395 would even peak at 17488 points, tickling the 17614 points of a mobile GeForce RTX 4060! Note in passing that these scores were achieved on an unfinished reference platform. The final scores could therefore be even better.

The end of entry-level mobile graphics cards?

If this is confirmed, AMD would have in its hands chips for laptops and tablets capable of fully satisfying mobile users looking for a compromise between performance and portability. The ability of their iGPU to properly handle complex graphics tasks without requiring a dedicated graphics card will indeed contribute to a reduction in energy consumption, and therefore an improvement in autonomy. Of course, the performance of the graphics engines integrated into these Strix Halo chips will be far from allowing you to play in 4K, but they seem to be sufficient to run recent titles in Full HD properly, provided that you are content with reasonable graphics settings.

AMD's Strix Halo range stands out for the integration of an improved RDNA 3.5 architecture and higher performance than the current top-of-the-range, the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 375. The Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 395, the flagship of this new series, is equipped with 16 Zen 5 cores and a Radeon 8060S iGPU with 40 compute units. In comparison, the Ryzen AI Max Pro 390 model has 12 CPU cores and a Radeon 8050S iGPU with 32 compute units. Two additional models, the Ryzen AI Max Pro 385 with 8 CPU cores and a Radeon 8050S and the Ryzen AI Max Pro 380 with 6 Zen 5 cores and an iGPU with 16 compute units, are also expected.

Model Cores / Threads Memory iGPU Compute Unit
Ryzen AI Max+ (PRO) 395 16C/32T LP5x-8000 Radeon 8060S 40
Ryzen AI Max (PRO) 390 12C/24T Radeon 8060S 40
Ryzen AI Max (PRO) 385 8C/16T Radeon 8050S 32
Ryzen AI Max PRO 380 6C/12T ? 16

While the PRO models are aimed at businesses, with specific features for professionals, non-PRO variants of the Ryzen AI Max series are also expected to be available for gamers, with identical graphics performance. Strix Halo is scheduled to be released at CES 2025, suggesting that products featuring these chips will be available within a few weeks.
