This YouTuber created the PS5 which makes millions of players dream

Matthew Perks, known for his YouTube channel DIY Perks, is a technical feat when he finally managed to transform the classic PlayStation 5 into a much thinner version, so much so that it could fit into the laptop sleeve of a backpack.

A PS5 to take with you

The DIYer's feat lies in his ability to shrink all of the PS5's core components into an extremely thin chassis. Using the console's original motherboard, Matthew had to completely rebuild the cooling system, including the heat sink and fan. Despite these modifications, he claims that the processor does not exceed 42 degrees Celsius, even under full load, without producing excessive fan noise!

On his YouTube channel, Matthew Perks explains step by step how he transformed the home console into a tablet, notably using a 3D printer to create an external case. It is not only the thinness of the device that impresses, but also its specifications.

The YouTuber chose to integrate a 14-inch 4K OLED screen from a damaged Alienware laptop, complemented by a sound system composed of two stereo speakers and a 5 W mini subwoofer. The weak point of this creation is its dependence on an external power supply, which requires a permanent wired connection to operate. There is no room for a battery.

Perks' tablet version of the PS5 looks like any device on the market, but it is much smaller than the most recent PlayStation and thinner, while offering a very good quality screen. Be careful though: DIY voids the warranty!

It must be admitted, however, that this creation does not correspond to what is generally expected of current portable consoles, which are usually smaller (but also much less powerful) than a full PlayStation 5. Sony has had some setbacks in the portable console sector and has never managed to position itself, abandoning the market to the Switch and the Steam Deck.

The manufacturer's latest attempt at portable gaming is the PlayStation Portal, a streaming-only device that retails for $219 and doesn't quite meet gamers' current expectations for portable gaming. Matthew Perks' invention, while larger than a typical Steam Deck, still seems to offer a good experience for (semi) mobile gaming thanks to its larger screen.
