VLC is about to usher in a small revolution. The media player will soon be able to translate and subtitle your videos using artificial intelligence. The utility, which already allows you to obtain subtitles by downloading the appropriate files online, could soon emancipate itself by generating subtitles on the fly. This is in any case the demonstration made by Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the President of VideoLAN during this CES 2025.
Subtitles generated and translated locally thanks to AI
To allow VLC to automatically generate (and translate) subtitles under the videos you watch, VideoLAN will rely on several open source artificial intelligence models. These AIs, which will be executed locally on your machine, will not need any Internet connection to function.
Note that the translation and generation of subtitles will be done in real time, without the need for the AI to analyze the video played in advance. This means that it will be possible to display subtitles for both locally stored videos and for TV programs viewed live (IPTV).
The function, which will also be free, could also be used to generate SRT subtitle files. Since this automatic subtitling module is apparently still under development, no deployment date has yet been communicated by VideoLAN. You will probably have to wait a few more weeks, or even months, to be able to watch TV channels from around the world subtitled in real time in all languages on your PC.
