WhatsApp is preparing a new option that will allow users to link their account to their social networks. A feature that has so far been reserved for professional accounts, but which could soon be accessible to everyone.
WhatsApp is testing the integration of Instagram into user profiles
Discovered in a beta version of WhatsApp for iPhone by WABetaInfo, this new option is not yet activated for users. A preview shows that a specific section will be added to the profile settings, where it will be possible to put links to other social accounts. WhatsApp’s desire to improve user engagement across its platforms is clear.
For now, the only integration available is Instagram, but other platforms, including Meta-owned platforms like Threads and Facebook, could be added before the official rollout. Unlike the current option for business accounts, adding the link will not require authentication. However, verification could be integrated before the release to avoid identity theft.
An optional feature
The integration of social networks into WhatsApp remains entirely optional. Each user will be able to choose whether or not to display their other profiles in their messaging account. With this option, Meta clearly aims to strengthen interactions between its different platforms.
WhatsApp now claims more than two billion active users each month, which is about as many as Instagram. We’ll see if this integration will appeal to users of both apps when it’s rolled out more widely.
