Will Lego Horizon Adventures be a real horizon game?

Will Lego Horizon Adventures be a real horizon game?

It's a pretty surprising fact, but PlayStation took advantage of Summer Game Fest to take a look at family games. LEGO Horizon Adventures was notably presented for the first time, bringing the little colored bricks back to the forefront. We learned that the title will be released on PS5, PC and even Nintendo Switch by the end of 2024. In the meantime, Sony gives us a fairly detailed description of the features that we will find in the game. It's clear that this is more of a LEGO game than a Horizon game. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Aloy made of bricks

Of all the PlayStation franchises, Horizon is not the first one that comes to mind when we hear about a possible LEGO game adaptation. The Little Big Planet, Sackboy and Astro franchises are already more relevant in terms of tone and family universe. Although the brand has tackled more serious franchises, Horizon doesn't even contain enough intentional humor to be remembered.

LEGO Horizon Adventures offers a refreshing and humorous experience of the Horizon universe, combining exploration, construction and combat in a world made of LEGO bricks. With a release scheduled for late 2024, this game promises to captivate players with its cheeky storytelling and stop-motion animations, while offering a collaborative and customizable adventure.

While the similarities with the Horizon games are palpable, the universe of the title will be completely new. The artistic style is also very different. The toy format forces stop-motion animations, which is not to displease us after seeing the first visuals.

LEGO Horizon Adventures fuses the post-apocalyptic world of the Horizon franchise with the magic of LEGO bricks, offering players a unique and captivating experience. In this adventure, Aloy uses her bow to fight and explore, shooting her enemies and using her focus to highlight points of interest. Players can shoot arrows through flames to create flaming projectiles, or ignite vines to open new passages. Exploration is highly rewarded, with studs (the game’s currency) scattered along the main paths and hidden chests full of treasure.

Cooperation, a powerful marketing argument

Upgrades play a crucial role in the adventure. In the central village, the Mother’s Heart, Aloy can upgrade her weapons and purchase useful modifications. Abilities like the LEGO Brick Separator allow for powerful attacks, while items like the Explosive Boots add devastating effects. Players can also find temporary power-ups while exploring or battling enemies, making each adventure unique and strategic.

Co-op is a key element of LEGO Horizon Adventures as it is a feature completely absent from the original Horizon games. In local co-op, players can switch between Aloy and Varl, each with their own unique abilities. Varl, armed with a spear, offers a different approach with unique power-ups. Players can revive each other if they fall, although this will result in the loss of temporary power-ups. The Mother’s Heart also allows for the customization of outfits and huts, adding a personal touch to the co-op experience.

A parallel and humorous dimension

Fans of the original franchise will find many familiar elements in LEGO Horizon Adventures, featuring the original voice actors from the PlayStation titles. Aloy remains at the heart of the action, using her bow and focus as she did in the Horizon games on PlayStation. The emphasis on exploration and item gathering, as well as the weapon and skill upgrade system, are reminiscent of the core mechanics of the series. This fusion of styles offers a humorous and lighthearted new perspective while respecting the essence of the Horizon games.
