Windows 11: The notepad may require connection to your Microsoft account, but that's not what you think

Will you have to sign in to your Microsoft account in Windows 11 Notepad to continue using it? The answer is no. Microsoft recently updated the utility to integrate its sign-in system for a good reason: to take advantage of the features offered by Copilot.

Notepad connects to your Microsoft account to access Copilot

The news could have gone unnoticed, because if you are already signed in to a Microsoft account on Windows 11 and have already opened Notepad, there is a good chance that the application is already signed in. It was after Bob Pony published a screenshot showing a window asking to sign in to a Microsoft account after opening Notepad for the first time on his machine that some users began to worry.

In reality, this connection to the Microsoft account is not mandatory. It’s only required if you want to take advantage of features powered by Copilot, Microsoft’s AI-powered assistant.

Sign in with your Microsoft account to use Rewrite and its features in Notepad. When you’re signed in, Microsoft collects information about your requests for security purposes.” Microsoft says in the sign-in wizard that appears in Notepad.

In concrete terms, the AI-assisted rewriting tool in Notepad is intended to help you improve your prose. With ChatGPT (which Copilot relies on), you can “reword your sentences, adjust the tone, or change the length of your content based on your preferences,” Microsoft explains on the support page dedicated to the feature.

Be careful, however, access to the rewrite function in Notepad is limited to users with a Microsoft 365 subscription. If this is not your case, there is simply no point in connecting your Microsoft account to Notepad.
