The read receipts in Google Messages are evolving. After an initial test in August, the application is making a slight change by adding a white background to the indicators. Enough to improve readability.

New read receipts for Google Messages

In its latest test version, Google Messages has slightly changed the appearance of read receipts. Initially, the indicators used a circular background matching the color of the message, with white icons. Now, this background becomes white, which contrasts more with the messages, especially in dark mode.

A change that is part of a series of changes that began in August. The receipts, placed below the message, are now directly in the bubble. The time and encryption status are no longer displayed by default, but it is still possible to display them by swiping the message to the left.

A gradual update

This update is currently limited to beta users, who have been receiving this new display since November. But the revised version with the white background seems to be reaching an even smaller number of users for now. Furthermore, availability varies depending on the parts of the application: on some devices, the indicators are updated only in the main list of messages, while they keep the old design in conversations.

As always, Google improves its applications incrementally, while making sure to test its new features before rolling them out more widely. With more than a billion users worldwide, Google Messages RCS is moving forward at a stealthy pace.
