If you received an email inviting you to subscribe to a Game Pass plan to enjoy World of Warcraft, ignore it. This is probably a mistake. The official Xbox Game Pass account X has publicly apologized following a false email that had no reason to be. This Tuesday, January 28, 2025, users registered in the manufacturer's newsletter received a message that was unexpected to say the least. This email titled “Play Call of Duty, Diablo IV, World of Warcraft and other franchises at Activision's Game Pass Success Story” featured a promotional visual for the online game, also accompanied by a console icon.
Unsurprisingly, it didn't take long for Internet users to imagine the launch of World of Warcraft on Xbox with an inclusion in the Game Pass catalog. The company was quick to react to prevent players from getting carried away:
“This is an error on our part, sorry for the confusion! Blizzard's World of Warcraft has been accidentally included in a Game Pass email when it is not available with the service – a correction email will be sent to those who received the original email.”
The unlikely nature of this error and the terms used by the Xbox Game Pass account, however, support previous rumors.
A premature revelation?
Now that Activision Blizzard has been operating under the Microsoft banner since the 2023 acquisition, the addition of World of Warcraft to the Game Pass catalog is only a matter of time. After all, the same scenario could be observed with Diablo IV. In March 2023, Blizzard denied the inclusion of the title in the subscription formula. A leak a few months later once again pushed the studio to say no. Diablo IV did, however, end up appearing in the Game Pass catalog in March 2024. And now, the additions of Activision Blizzard licenses are coming one after the other.
How can we explain that an entire email mentioning World of Warcraft in its subject line and in the integrated images could have been generated simply by mistake? We can only speculate at this subject in the absence of official information, but this stupidity seems to all to be a little too premature announcement. In 2023, the vice-president and executive producer of the MMO Holly Longdale had already mentioned the idea of a console port. Is this project about to come to fruition? Also, the Game Pass account simply explained that the game is not available in the catalog, rather than stating that it never will be. We are extrapolating, of course, but hope springs eternal, right?
