A cyber attack strikes the Metropolis of Grand Paris: data from thousands of stolen people

The Greater Paris metropolitan area (MGP) has suffered a cyberattack. The intercommunality, which lists 130 municipalities in Île-de-France, indicates that it noted a theft of personal data last month. The metropolis "found that stored personal data had been fraudulently extracted" by malicious individuals. Targeted by suspicious calls, MGP agents sounded the alarm. This is how the metropolis discovered the incident.

The leak affects "around 5,000 people, including our 250 agents, 208 elected officials and all the partners gravitating around the MGP". They risk "having their personal data disclosed", explains Philippe Castanet, director general of services for the Greater Paris metropolis, in a press release. press release.

A mountain of stolen data, but it's not "dramatic"

Among the data concerned, we find the name, first name, professional or personal email address, and mobile phone number. Nevertheless, the metropolis considers that there "is nothing dramatic", given that there "were no bank details lost". The attackers will not be able to use the banking data to make purchases or siphon off the contents of the victims' bank accounts.

Philippe Castanet says he is aware, however, that “many people risk being contacted on their personal phones and being asked surprising questions”. In short, the individuals concerned will find themselves in the crosshairs of hackers specialized in phishing attacks. This type of attack can result in the theft of other sensitive information... such as banking details. With the data in their possession, the scammers can also design convincing offensives, which maximizes the chances of achieving their ends.

A complaint against X

The metropolis indicates that it has filed a complaint against X for "fraudulent collection of personal data, breach of trust and fraudulent extraction of data". To protect its data in the future, the intercommunality has committed to applying "corrections". The MGP promised “regular monitoring of the incident and the fixes made”.

France continues to accumulate data leaks this year. Recently, La Poste, Chronopost, the Kiabi brand and the Caisse des Dépôts have suffered major thefts of information. In addition, French municipalities often find themselves in the sights of cybercriminals. Last year, French cities were frequently targeted by hackers. For example, the city of Saint-Nazaire suffered an attack that paralyzed all its services in April. A few months later, municipal sites such as Marseille, Nice, Nantes, Toulouse and Bordeaux were targeted by DDoS attacks.
